What to ask about a vintage watch's service history

“It is running” and “it has documented servicing” tell you different things. Learn what to ask.

Ask when and what was done

When a listing mentions servicing, ask when it took place, who did it and what work was included. An adjustment, a strap change or a visual inspection is different from work on the movement. Request records where available and distinguish documented work from a previous owner's recollection.

Ask about replaced components

For a vintage watch, knowing which components were replaced provides context for its operation and preservation. Ask about the dial, hands, crown, crystal and movement. A replaced component alone does not define a watch's overall quality; understand the work and how it relates to what you are looking for.

Be clear when the history is unknown

A missing invoice does not prove that a watch was never serviced. It also does not justify describing it as recently serviced. An unknown history should be stated clearly so you can consider a future inspection and decide whether the watch fits your expectations and budget.

Explain how you plan to wear it

Explain whether you want to wear it daily or keep it for special occasions. Ask which recent checks have been carried out and what limitations are known. In particular, do not treat an old water-resistance marking as proof of current resistance. Before exposing it to water, seek an appropriate assessment of the watch.

Keep your watch's records

Keep the agreed description, receipts, photographs and records of subsequent work. This small archive helps you follow its history and discuss maintenance. If a watch in our collection interests you, request its known history and specific terms before agreeing to a purchase.
